    Course Outline

Five comprehensive lessons aligned to the five HRCI aPHR® content areas.

    1

    Lesson 1: Talent Acquisition

To be successful, organizations need the right employees at the right time. This is achieved through an effective human resource planning process that helps employers identify the tasks required to meet organizational objectives. You'll learn how to recruit candidates and select employees with the skills and competencies needed — all in accordance with applicable anti-discrimination laws.

    Key Topics

    • Human resource planning process
    • Recruiting and selecting candidates
    • Anti-discrimination laws and compliance
    • Matching skills and competencies to organizational objectives
    2

    Lesson 2: Learning and Development

When new employees are hired, they need to be integrated into the organization and trained on their specific job functions. Training doesn't end with orientation — employees should be given opportunities to develop their skills and knowledge on an ongoing basis. This lesson focuses on closing the gap between an employee's current abilities and the skills required to perform at an optimal level.

    Key Topics

    • New hire integration and orientation
    • Job-specific training and onboarding
    • Ongoing skill development
    • Closing the gap between current and required skills
    3

    Lesson 3: Compensation and Benefits

Employee compensation includes all rewards individuals receive for performing work — both pay and benefits. The range of pay for a job is determined by evaluating the nature of the work and the skills, knowledge, and effort required. Benefits are non-financial rewards provided in addition to regular pay, including paid holidays, vacations, retirement plans, and insurance — all heavily influenced by laws and regulations.

    Key Topics

    • Pay structures and pay ranges
    • Experience, seniority, and performance-based pay
    • Benefits: PTO, retirement plans, insurance
    • Laws and regulations governing compensation
    4

    Lesson 4: Employee Relations

Employee relations involves the relationship between an organization and its employees. The HR function plays an important role here, including understanding union representation, unfair labor practices, and collective bargaining. Also critical: good organizational design, culture, and communication, along with systems to properly handle workforce behavior, grievances, discipline, and employee rights.

    Key Topics

    • Union representation and unfair labor practices
    • Collective bargaining basics
    • Organizational design, culture, and communication
    • Discipline, grievances, and employee rights
    5

Lesson 5: Compliance and Risk Management

Risk management is the process of assessing risk and developing strategies to protect the interests of an organization. This includes evaluating employee safety hazards, health concerns, and security vulnerabilities — and developing ways to protect both employees and assets. Another source of risk: the fines, penalties, lawsuits, and settlements that result from failing to comply with federal, state, and local HR laws.

    Key Topics

    • Workplace safety hazards and security
    • Employee health and wellness concerns
    • Federal, state, and local HR regulations
    • Risk strategies to protect employees and assets

    All necessary materials are included.
