    What Is an Electrician?

    The Electrician Program at Summit College is offered on-site for VA students and in a Hyflex format that prepares graduates for a career in the field of electricity — including residential and commercial, solar, motor control, and low voltage. Graduates will know the necessary core and specialty skills to successfully meet electrician standards and function in a new market.

    Instructional topics include: electrical safety, theories and tools associated with electricity, the National Electrical Code (NEC), wiring, power distribution, circuits, AC/DC motors and low voltage, cabling, and green electricity. Special topics prepare students for an array of job opportunities including, but not limited to, electrical installation in residential and commercial settings.

    Interactive Hyflex sessions may be taught in a classroom setting or in a laboratory located on campus; these classes are delivered online and off campus. Instructors facilitate each lecture in addition to group discussions to keep the course exciting and fun. Students also gain access to resources such as Summit's online library.

    Electricians install, maintain, and repair electrical systems in homes, businesses, and industrial facilities. The role blends electrical theory, code compliance, hands-on wiring, motor control, low-voltage cabling, and green / renewable energy work — across both residential and commercial environments.

    How Electrician Training Is Delivered

    Format

    Hybrid / Hyflex — each class session and learning activity is offered in-person, synchronously online, and asynchronously online. Residential (on-campus) format for VA students. Teacher/Student Ratio 1:35 Lecture / 1:20 Lab.

    9 modules × 4 weeks each — 720 total instructional clock hours (380 lecture / 340 lab) and 55 quarter credit hours over 36 weeks.

    Flexibility

    Students must maintain 80% overall program attendance and complete all 9 modules (4 prerequisite modules plus 5 specialty modules) to be eligible for a Certificate of Completion.

    Learning Flow

    Each module includes an estimated 10–14 hours of homework outside the classroom (98 total estimated homework hours across the program). Students participate in CPR and First Aid training and OSHA 10 training during EL1400 Electrical Theory.
