Fortis College: the recommendation
Darius Goldman, founder of Career-Bond, examines healthcare hiring across Ohio, including phlebotomy and EKG opportunities at Cincinnati and Akron hospitals.
He explains why he favors hands-on career training based on actual employer demand and why Fortis College makes his shortlist: established campuses, vocational training, and potential access to WIOA workforce funding.

[32:57-47:46] let's say you don't want to be a startup founder Let's say you want a career Let's say you work in retail Like what
[32:57-47:46] career could you get I like careers that are 3 things and then we'll go into these careers I like careers that are safe So how do I measure a safe career
[32:57-47:46] This is a safe career to me How does it fare against AI How does it fare against a recession And how does it fare against outsourcing And let me explain the last one first because not that many people know what that one means Outsourcing is the risk that the job that's being done could be done elsewhere for cheaper So an example is anything over a computer
[32:57-47:46] what we've learned is if it's being done on a computer-- And it's loud outside Hold on
[32:57-47:46] Anything being done on a computer could be done anywhere So
[32:57-47:46] my first company I had 28 US-based employees Now I have 8 employees and most of them are offshore Like I hate to say that for American workers but
[32:57-47:46] right And I save a lot of money that way
[32:57-47:46] So that's outsource-proof
[32:57-47:46] that's the definition of outsource But a career is it AI-proof Is it outsource-proof Is it recession-proof Here's why I love healthcare and skilled trades and certain
[32:57-47:46] technology
[32:57-47:46] careers But both skilled trades and healthcare
[32:57-47:46] are AI-proof What does that mean AI cannot do the job Now in this live stream I'm actually talking about the hospital jobs that AI is disrupting because I think it's important to understand the difference
[32:57-47:46] phlebotomy EKG medical assistant nurse AI cannot do those Anything that touches a patient AI c- AI cannot do Excuse me for that
[32:57-47:46] 2 is it recession-proof Yes If you get sick you go to the doctor end of story
[32:57-47:46] right Obviously there's extremes where people will be like "I'm not going to the doctor." I'm talking about normal people
[32:57-47:46] Is DoorDash recession-proof Absolutely not Is being a gym trainer recession-proof Absolutely not Is being a Uber driver recession-proof Absolutely
[32:57-47:46] not Because if there's a recession and stock market crashes or housing market crashes the first thing you're gonna give up you're gonna give up your gym trainer
[32:57-47:46] You're gonna make your own dinners
[32:57-47:46] and you're gonna go pick up your own dinners or go out yourself You're not gonna pay someone The age of entitlement the age of laziness that we live in "Oh let me just pay someone to pick up my groceries for me Let me just pay someone to go to a CVS and pick up my prescription for me and DoorDash it to me." The age of entitlement we live in those are luxuries So if there's a recession those are the first thing that lose But a career in healthcare does not get replaced If you get sick you have to go to the doctor So healthcare careers are AI-proof healthcare careers are recession-proof and healthcare careers are a- are outsource-proof You can't send an AI job you can't send a healthcare job to the Philippines to get done for you at half the price Now
[32:57-47:46] some jobs in healthcare are gonna be disrupted by AI and that's what I'm talking about in this live pod that administrative roles customer support roles are
[32:57-47:46] getting affected by AI
[32:57-47:46] but not phlebotomist So
[32:57-47:46] when I do these lives I like to pull stats from actual states so we can like talk with real information So I pulled for this live from Ohio
[32:57-47:46] Christ Hospital in Ohio so we're in October 2026 had recently 14 1 4 phlebotomy open positions posted at the same time TriHealth another health center in Ohio posts phlebotomists
[32:57-47:46] That's the person who draws the blood and it's an entry-level role You could train for this in weeks not months TriHealth in Ohio posts for phlebotomists at 39,700 annualized to 51,400 annualized salary Cincinnati Children's
[32:57-47:46] in Ohio
[32:57-47:46] has a post for a lead phlebotomist
[32:57-47:46] at roughly 24 to $30 an hour
[32:57-47:46] The reason I love these and the reason I like phlebotomy
[32:57-47:46] is it's a entry into healthcare You could always stack up from there But you train in weeks you get a certification and these job postings are
[32:57-47:46] what I found coming into this live What I'm doing now for anyone joining when I do lives I'm gonna do I'm gonna pull stats I'm gonna pull stats from major cities because it's no more fun-- It's not fun just saying "Oh it's a great career." I like to like actually point to things so that's what we're-- that's the new trend I'm doing and if you want me to cover your city
[32:57-47:46] shoot me a comment and be like "Hey Darius would you do
[32:57-47:46] Michigan next?" And "Would you do Michigan HVAC guys?" And
[32:57-47:46] I will Like I'll
[32:57-47:46] make it the focus of my next live So
[32:57-47:46] if you need-- If you if you wanna know how to get into phlebotomy
[32:57-47:46] if you wanna get into phlebotomy all you have to do is take a short-term training course and if you need help finding one
[32:57-47:46] you could get it on
[32:57-47:46] Career Bond which is through my bio
[32:57-47:46] and
[32:57-47:46] for anyone joining like and the fact that I'm talking to a couple people who I've
[32:57-47:46] recognized from other pods who am I Why am I doing this And like why are we like having this inside conversation So I'm Darius I founded Career Bond We're one of the largest career training marketplaces We're not a school We're the platform We're Airbnb right You go to Airbnb to find a hotel or an apartment That's what Career Bond is You come to us to get matched with training provode-- p-programs near you So I talk about training programs I talk about training programs that you don't need a 4year degree to go into Now because I'm doing so many of these lives I stopped using-- I made this decision just recently I stopped using just national trends 'cause I found it was too vague So now before I do any live I'm essentially picking one city Today was Ohio Cincinnati Ohio But I'm picking one city and what I'm doing is I'm going to Indeed and candidly this is what you should be doing as a career changer I'm doing what I'm telling people to do I pick a city so Cincinnati Ohio greater Cincinnati area Ohio I go on Indeed and I type into Indeed phlebotomist
[32:57-47:46] associate nurse registered nurse licensed practical nurse medical assistant EKG technician and I see the job posting That's where I'm getting all my stats from I see who's hiring from them Then like if it's Cincinnati Children's Hospital then I'll Google them be like "Okay what's happening in the news with Cincinnati Children's Hospital?" That's how I get this information But I found it makes for these lives to be so much more interesting Even though I'm doing this live and
[32:57-47:46] there's 50 states out there and
[32:57-47:46] maybe all of you are from 49 other states I found it's more entertaining for me to actually be able to like pinpoint a region and use that region as the launch point for a real discussion So that's what we're doing So right now what I'm saying is
[32:57-47:46] in Cincinnati there is absolutely a hiring need for phlebotomists of all of all places of all things And
[32:57-47:46] the better programs-- This is what I like The better programs that teach phlebotomy actually combine it because it's so short and so like just stick a blood and take the blood out The better programs will combine phlebotomy with EKG and the funny thing is because of this hospitals are also hiring for both at the same time So at Good Samaritan Hospital
[32:57-47:46] in Ohio
[32:57-47:46] the phlebotomists also run EKGs 2 skills one person How do I know this Because I'm looking at the Indeed job postings and when it says "Phlebotomist needed," then for Good Samaritan it says "We want you to also do EKGs." So it's showing you It's showing you what the employer expects from an employee And then I say "Okay so you don't have the job yet today But if you got trained for it today if you got trained for it today and you finish your training these would be the job postings you would be looking at," which is why I like to do this
[32:57-47:46] is why I like to look at job postings before I advise someone to go into career training because I say "Pretend
[32:57-47:46] you graduated from your program today
[32:57-47:46] Now you'd be looking for jobs so let's see what jobs are out there." Right So that's what I do And at Good Samaritan Hospital in Ohio they're asking-- they're
[32:57-47:46] hiring for phlebotomists that also run EKGs which says to me "If you could find a program that does both at once," boom What is that like 2 birds one stone Double whammy There you go And think about this from the hospital's point of view
[32:57-47:46] If one person could draw blood and run a heart test
[32:57-47:46] that's one hire covering 2 needs That's who they'll want So ideally they're paying you a little bit more but they're not paying for 2 employees They're just paying for one So EKG technician some people call it ECG I call it EKG
[32:57-47:46] is one of my favorite
[32:57-47:46] fast healthcare certifications for quickness of entry right EKG it's my favorite for speed All you do you're hooking up a patient to an electrocardiogram You're capturing what the heart is doing You're giving the clinical team the data that then they use to make decisions right You're going in you're sticking on those electrodes you're running the test and you're
[32:57-47:46] That's it So the better schools out there will combine phlebotomy and EKG into one program
[32:57-47:46] Weeks to a few months depending on which school right But it connects because this is what the employees are asking for So in Akron Ohio Cleveland Clinic Akron Ohio right They have a general EKG tech posting
[32:57-47:46] that says
[32:57-47:46] you could apply for this job if you completed a medical assistant program So here you don't even need to be trained specifically for that If you're a medical assistant they'll hire for that So I like that right That's the overlapping of careers And Summa in Akron Summa City Hospital they're hiring phlebotomists
[32:57-47:46] They have
[32:57-47:46] their own formal program to teach it So sometimes you could go to the hospital directly and learn it That one I want to caution about I
[32:57-47:46] don't know enough hospitals that will also teach you for the job It's been my experience that they want you to already be certified So while yes there may be hospitals
[32:57-47:46] that will train you in this I don't want you to rely on that I want you to like take the initiative find a vocational training program take the course You could train for phlebotomy and EKG online It's crazy but like there's ways to train for it online In Ohio there's a school There's
[32:57-47:46] Fortis
[32:57-47:46] or Fortis
[32:57-47:46] College
[32:57-47:46] It's in Ohio I like them And they do
[32:57-47:46] they do WIOA the grants That's why I like them But you could train for these in
[32:57-47:46] weeks and months So here's what we're talking about Ohio hospitals
[32:57-47:46] on the one hand they are cutting jobs But on the other hand they can't fill jobs fast enough The jobs that they're cutting this is the research I did prior to this segment They're cutting jobs because they're replacing them with AI but the jobs that they're cutting
[32:57-47:46] may or may not surprise you right
[32:57-47:46] paperwork-based jobs are getting cut in Ohio when I when I did my research for this pod Notes phones billing scheduling That's where AI
[32:57-47:46] is replacing humans
[32:57-47:46] read up Who Fortis That's one I like F-O-R-T-I-S
[32:57-47:46] If you go there tell me your experience with Fortis I
[32:57-47:46] love them I'll tell you why I love them I love Fortis because when I look at a school I go "Are you an eligible training provider ETB?" That means you're issued to do WIOA and Fortis is in a lot of locations I can't say every location I obviously can't speak for them That's number one Number 2
[32:57-47:46] are you a specialist Fortis is a what you call skilled trades It's vocational training So they do healthcare and they do skilled trades So they do the wrenches and they do the stethoscopes And please those are analogies That's not like they don't teach wrench
[32:57-47:46] what
[32:57-47:46] And then 3 are you accredited Yes they're accredited They're
[32:57-47:46] massive They're like they're huge The ones that I try to avoid
[32:57-47:46] I try and avoid some of these like I'm gonna call them boot camps A boot camp is like
[32:57-47:46] a school or a college that like may not even have a physical presence anywhere may just be online And again not-- I don't wanna knock online education entirely but do they have a physical presence somewhere or is it someone who just created a course That's the distinction I like to make And sometimes the shorthand for finding a really good school is Hold on I wanna take a screenshot of that comment 'cause I like it Make And sometimes the shorthand for finding a really good school is Hold on I wanna take a screenshot of that comment 'cause I like it Screenshot of that comment 'cause I like it
[32:57-47:46] go I got it Boop do-do
[32:57-47:46] boop
[32:57-47:46] it's shorthand Like if it's a boot camp and they don't have a physical location I don't know how good that's gonna be
[32:57-47:46] but Fortis
[32:57-47:46] is massive They're in like 27 different markets It's they're massive And schools that are that big did something right so that's why I like them Eligible training provider
[32:57-47:46] a lot of physical locations and then healthcare and skilled trades
